Prepping for a Disaster: Is Your Cat Ready?

Aug 8, 2020

Welcome back to Catology: Kitten Lady & Friends, my interview series helping us stay curious about cats! Royal Canin and I are teaming up to bring you conversations with some of the most fascinating people in feline welfare about everything from cat behavior to veterinary care to nutrition to rescue. This week my guest is John Peaveler, an expert in disaster preparedness and emergency response for animals. We talk all about how to create a disaster plan, what emergency response looks like after a disaster, and how each of us can play a part in keeping animals--and the people who love them--safe.

  • You mentioned admin supplies... I foster for 2 local organizations, and recently I went to Walmart and bought a bunch of the admin type stuff that was on sale during the school prep season: pens, pencils, paper for the printer, garbage bags, and such. Everyone knows that Rescues need cat food, dog food, kitty litter, and financial donations, but hardly anyone thinks to go buy the "admin" things that are needed on a daily basis that are not actual pet related. Both Rescues were thrilled to get the supplies. For $100, you can buy a LOT of supplies and you will make every Rescue absolutely delighted to see you come in with those supplies!!!

  • I think cats absolutely do have a sense about impending earthquakes. 43:52 My cats totally knew about the Nisqually earthquake about 2 minutes before it hit. I think they thought that something was going to go wrong with the house because they rushed past me, one after another as fast as they could go to get out. It turned out to be minor, but they weren't taking any chances.

  • Ok are my cats ready! Well on Aug 10th 2020 in Iowa we had a derecho blow though, bringing winds in excess of 120 mph, the equivalent of a cat 2/3 hurricane. The whole event lasted 45 mins we had little to no warning of the event. My cats however, rode out the storm fast asleep on their blankets. We had no power for 7 days. I was scrambling for food for me, but we had hit the pet food store before the storm so my 18 year old kitties had plenty of food and slept with me warm and cozy, not a worry in the world!! All that said a bit tongue in cheek, it is a very frightening experience so please take note of all the experts!!

  • 😭😭😭😭Oh my word, these innocent fur babies. 💖💖💖💖 People stayed behind with their animals 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 My empath lost it, box of tissue please....I'm back had to get that tissue. Deep breath, continue watching....pets that lost their owners.... I have three rescue cats inside, my fur babies, and 8 homeless (feral) cats. I have done TNR. I have shelters for them and feed them. Even have my 'wyze' (inexpensive, can see cam on your cell phone) small security camera to see them on my back porch and check recording here and there to ck night time activity. 💖🐱💖🐈💖 59:28 what, Wow! This is Important information for all!!💖 Thank You!!! 💖🐈💖

  • Quite informative - and quite complete! Thanks to both of you for that video. Being a volunteer at Germany's biggest disaster relief organisation I can only recommend to check out disaster relief groups or firefighters or the Red Cross for whether there's any chance to volunteer. Especially if you cannot have a pet for whatever reason. Also, those groups now and then need volunteers who act as people who need to be saved or treated or to be found by a rescue dog while waiting for rescue in a building or site with limited access. Actually rescue dogs need a new smell now and then, so this is a good chance to spend some time in an (mostly) outside environment with some nice animals. :) Most organisations require a training for special tasks but there's almost always a chance to volunteer for a day without longer training if you promise to stick to given orders and instructions. :)

The hamster is just like, "if mom is going it's cool because I love her and trust her", cat is like "slave has food, I will go in idiotic box" but the gerbil... "I want to stay in condo! • Midwesterner here! We've had three or four tornado warnings in the past month and my mom and I have gotten laser-focused on cat evac. The first time getting everyone down to the basement was ridiculous, the cats thought it was a game and would escape and run back upstairs whenever the basement door opened. But by this last time we had it all worked out- we each have our assigned cat. We get the cat and his carrier and take them downstairs. Once in the basement, we put the cat in the carrier. Then we are free to run back upstairs and grab anything we forgot (boots, chargers, etc). Once everyone and everything is settled downstairs, the boys come out of their carriers and get to cuddle, and we put treats in their carriers, so that they'll go back in. It's worked like a charm.

  • We are having tornado warnings as I watch this. I was not prepared. Our basement is not really somewhere I can bring the cats. It's more like a hole in the ground below our house, with lots of crevices and probably things like rat poison. I have put them in the bathroom for now since there are no windows in there. We have an old brick house, built to stand for centuries, so I'm not super worried, but it is still scary. We don't get much in the way of disasters here.

  • My fire alarms went off and woke us at 5am. It was nothing bad, but I am worried I would have lost one cat. One ran to me looking for security. One ran and hid. I got them both out in under 2 minutes. But if it was a real fire, how do i get that one to me faster? That 2 minutes could have seriously harmed him.

  • As someone who runs a sanctuary for 22 cats in Florida this is something i have to think of constantly. Being able to trap, transfer, contain, and move that many animals is a daunting task. Being prepared with supplies and bags is vital to moving quickly and calmly in the heat of a disaster.

  • We just went through our own disaster. Last week on Tuesday the tail end of hurricane hit Ontario Canada and my area went under tornado watch and then warning because one touched down. The rain was horrible and our house couldn't take the water and our entire basement (My apartment) flooded. Not only was i trying to save our house and belongings but i had to get all my animals out and up to safety. Thankfully we didn't have to evacuate but watching this and going through last week makes me realize how much more prepared i need to be. I have animals with disabilities and i never even thought to have their meds and things prepared. Thank you so much for doing these they really do help.

She moved into her mom's house, but had to suddenly find fosters/homes for all these kittens. We were originally going to foster him, but we ended up keeping him. :)
