The Future of Cat Shelters! Where Are We Going, and How Do We Get There?

Welcome to episode eight of Catology: Kitten Lady & Friends, my interview series all about staying curious about cats! In this final episode, I'm talking with two incredible experts in animal sheltering, Dr. Julie Levy of Operation Catnip and Million Cat Challenge, and Kristen Hassen of Pima Animal Care Center and NACA. We talk about the history of cat programs in animal shelters, where we are today as an industry, and most importantly what it's going to take to get us to where we need to go. Many thanks to @ROYAL CANIN for their partnership on this educational series!

  • My very first foster was an FIV+ adult cat. He was so sweet; he stayed with me for about a month before being adopted. My current fosters are kittens from a hoarding case.

  • My wife and I love you and learn a lot. Question: When administrating liquid via subcutaneously can Pedialyte be use when you can get the liquid vet bag, or can another type of sterile water work in emergencies? Another side question is that I read the Pedailyte having Zinc is very toxic for kittens...true? Thanks for what you do! Roberto (

  • Love you all! So grateful to see more people (I'll selfishly say, like me) advocating for cats! They are sentient and they matter. They are about as intelligent as dogs. Some cats are probably smarter than some dogs. If only I could decode their meows into English ...

  • I think it would be awesome if Kitten Lady made a sort of learning specific series for educating cat lovers to cat novices alike with information like the content of this video and more. A modern series from everything she's been learning especially as of lately. Hitting on some of these topics and stereotypes and more. That'd be so awesome. :D

  • How can I get in touch with people nearby to effect change for a specific shelter in Olympia Washington? I don't even live in Olympia, but the shelter needs lots of help. They have newer kennels for cats, but the portals could make a difference. (The cat kennels are all in one little room.) The area where the dogs are is concrete and chain-link and stinks to high heaven. Then they have this teeny tiny area kind of like a small hallway where they have a few bunnies/guinea pigs/whatever in little cages. Who can I contact to start to help this shelter? (I have ms and with my fatigue and cognitive issues, the project is just too much for me to start alone.) Thank you.

  • Hey kitten lady! Hope you are doing well. The world and all it's cats are blessed to have you. I needed an advice. A stray cat used to come to my place for food. About 1.5 months ago she gave a litter of 3 kittens at my place. The cat mommy and kittens stay at my place all the time now. Mommy has been going out for an hour or so lately. My question is that, how can I socialize the kittens when they have their mommy to feed them too. Like in your videos, I've been feeding them with my hands and not giving them free food but the kittens are not calm when I pick them up without food. They start screaming and scratching whenever I hold them in my hand. How can I make them friendly. The kittens are 1 month and 21 days right now. I will be grateful to you if you reply. Please please please please please reply. Please ❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏

  • Spay and Neuter fever occurred in the 1970s. Basically, it happened in Los Angeles with groups such as The Basehart foundation, The Lange Foundation, Doris ay and other local organizations in L.A. that spread the word about the benefits of spay and neutering, Basically, cats and dogs were not reproducing thus lowering the pet overpopulation problem. It was huge in the 70s.Moreover, certain behavioral problems were decreased when cats and dogs were spayed and neutered, They became good companions to human beings.

We struggle with foster care as kittens are dumped on a regular basis in markets mainly. The few individual rescuers in Goa don't have what have what I have which is, a large area. We all struggle with funds as we rely on well wishers and supporters. Your videos are so educative and positive. My gratitude to you for making things better for cats.

    • Have you checked with your city's or county's Animal Services department? Or the local Humane Society? Sometimes there are campaigns for free or reduced-price neutering. Google "name of your city or county" and "animal services" and "cat neutering" and see what comes up.

    • Persistence is key, feed her every day and maybe she will follow you. If not it may be for the best, the right cat for you will come. They say the cat finds you and it's true, I have two feral ones I'm feeding & they live on my porch now. I'm afraid the female is pregnant though.

    Sourav DasguptaSourav DasguptaMonth ago
  • How do you stop or prevent people from hoarding cats? Maybe your messaging about cats desperately needing "rescuing" from an outdoor situation encourages people with little means or ability to care for cats adequately to take in cats just to, in their mind, just basically save their lives, and then they get quickly overwhelmed if they can't afford to spay and neuter the cats. And certain people who are hoarders, cannot consistently, effectively clean their own home, much less a litter box. They will take cats in, but never let them go out. Even the kittens. Hoarders become recluses, who avoid people coming into their homes, and often don't let the cats ever go outside, either, so it becomes difficult to identify a hoarding situation in its early stages. Maybe suppliers of pet food could tip off cat advocates.

    Ideoform SunIdeoform SunMonth ago
    • Honestly the best way to prevent hoarders is to make sure people that need mental health care get it and that people that need financial help to neuter their cats can get that help. To stop talking about homeless cat and the cat overpopulation would not help at all because someone with the potensial of becoming a hoarder can still meet one of those cats in the streets. Intead make sure they know where to turn for help when they meet that cat.

  • I think a big barrier to adoption is landlords who won't accept cats. First, people need better training on how to keep cats in a way that doesn't damage a house. Second, is allergies. Smog, pollution, and poor diet leads to many people with immune systems that become sensitized to cats. If even one person in a household has allergies, then none of them can foster or adopt a cat. Sometimes even a whole building needs to be cat free for this reason. My mom is allergic to cats, but because of progressive shots she received, she can now be around them.

  • Biggest Question @kittenlady + Guest, If we pause TNR, SNR, RTF, etc. because of the pandemic, WHEN do we resume and WHO should be doing it?! In Orange County, CA 2019 OC Animal Care saw the most kittens of any year before during kitten season - Unprecedented #'s!! I can only imagine what 2021 will bring with the indefinite hault of their RTF Program (and to think that one of the board of supervisors there said, "we don't believe that we will see a population boom with us not doing it an RTF Program."!!! So, if and when we resume those programs, do you suggest we have specialized teams or shelter employees doing the trapping vs the puplic bringing the cats in, so as not to expose more people to contracting covid?

    ErishkigallErishkigallMonth ago
  • There's not a lot of vets who care about the cat or dog population no end to this problem.

    Perry NightPerry NightMonth ago
    • The veterinary community as a whole does little to help with low cost spay neuter. They charge a fortune and most won't participate in programs to help cats and dogs. We trap 50 cats a week in New Orleans and getting spay neuter appointments is a major issue. Just recently we got one veterinarian to help and work with the Louisiana SPCA TNR program. If we had more vets we could trap more!

  • I want to know how to keep my resident cat healthy when fostering. I started fostering a kitten, and now I'm sure she has gotten my cat sick. She's been quarantined but I will concede not 100%. The shelter i took her from said she could be with other cats and had her free range at their shelter. I am very upset at myself and don't know what to do for my sick kitty (I already took my cat to the vet because I was worried when the foster kitten wasn't getting better on antibiotics, the vet said my cat looked fine.) But now he has licked his nose skin off completely. There is this this red raw line down his nose. He also seems less energetic and his ears feel hot. I am beside myself. [Note: I am from the US but live in South Korea. I volunteer at a cat shelter and I often wonder if I'm doing more harm than good prolonging some of these cats' lives. I hoped I could help just this one super sick kitten. I was sure she would fail at the shelter. But it seems I've done this at the expense of my own beloved cat]

I did call ahead to see if she was still there as we were watching her on the internet being available but the shelter was 60 miles away. The lady asked us a couple questions and said come on up and see if you like her. It was just so sad she had been there for so long. We decided to bring her home. She never was very friendly. We had her 8 years. I just had to let her go last week. Missing her. She was special needs as she aged and I keep thinking I need to go do that extra feeding pick up her food clean up lots of grooming as she has quit her own grooming etc.
